The Margaret Mahy Nationwide Read was a great success. At the Karori Library, we had a lovely and attentive audience made up of children, parents, and grandparents. We started the day reading stories featuring lions and crocodiles – The Lion in the Meadow, Green Marmalade to You Too, and Why Anna Went Upside Down – then finished with a couple of crowd favourites – Bubble Trouble and The Witch in the Cherry Tree. Almost everyone at the session went home having issued a Margaret Mahy title from the library, or had plans to head to the nearest bookshop in search of more of her books. Reports and photos from other story times around the country can be found here. Everyone agreed, it was a day Margaret would have been proud of.
This Sunday is The Wellington Storylines Family Day, 10am-3pm at The Michael Fowler Centre. The day will include guest authors and illustrators, competitions and crafts for children of all ages. Mary and I will be volunteering on the competitions desk. We’re really looking forward to seeing the fabulous illustrations and stories being entered. Full details and a free programme download can be found on the website here. If you’re in Wellington on Sunday, we’d love to see you there.
Happy Writing!
