Writing that shows us things about the character gets the reader more involved in the story than writing that tells the same information. Below are some examples of showing vs telling.<\/p>\n<p><b>You could say:<\/b><br \/>\n\u201cShe was sad that he had left.\u201d<br \/>\n<b>Or you could show the reader, by saying:<br \/>\n<\/b>\u201cShe stood watching his car drive away until she could no longer see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>You could say:<br \/>\n<\/b>\u201cHe was afraid that the teacher would yell at him.\u201d<br \/>\n<b>Or you could say:<!--more--><br \/>\n<\/b>\u201cHe walked to the front of the class with his head bowed, avoiding Mrs Periwinkle\u2019s stare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In both of these examples, the second version is more interesting. When you show rather than tell, you give the reader a chance to become involved in the story.<\/p>\n<p>Try adding a sentence to the examples below which shows the feeling written in brackets.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He watched his sister play netball. (bored)<\/li>\n<li>She looked at her Grandma\u2019s photo. (sad)<\/li>\n<li>She opened the present.
