Last Sunday, Mary and I volunteered at the Wellington Storylines Family Day. We were looking after the competition zone, collecting all the fabulous creative writing and illustration entries. The Margaret Mahy Nationwide Read was a great success. At the Karori Library, we had a lovely and attentive audience made up of children, parents, and grandparents. We started the day reading stories featuring lions and crocodiles – The Lion in the Meadow, Green Marmalade to You Too, and Why Anna Went Upside Down – then finished with a couple of crowd favourites – Bubble Trouble and The Witch in the Cherry Tree. Farewell to Margaret Mahy

New Zealand has lost one of our most treasured authors. Margaret Mahy passed away in Christchurch on July 23th, aged 76. She leaves behind her a massive literary legacy, including more than 100 picture books, 40 novels and 20 collections of short stories.
